About Balance Brewing
Balance Brewing aims to create a community space where friends, old and new, can meet over a beer.
The idea for Balance Brewing began when co-founders Rob and Matt worked together at Hitchhiker Brewing in 2019. They shared a vision of opening their own brewery that focused on balance in all things. They wanted to create beers that were balanced in terms of flavor, drinkability and creativity. They wanted to build a tap list that appealed to a wide variety of customers, from beer aficionados to newcomers to craft beer. This balanced philosophy extends to their business approach as well; seeking to create a positive working atmosphere and work/life balance for all of their employees. Above all they wanted to create a inviting space for their local community, where everyone feels welcome to meet up with a friend, share a meal, enjoy a conversation, or celebrate special occasions.
When the Babcock Brewery location became available in 2024, both Matt and Rob were excited to bring their 20+ years of experience in the craft brewing industry to the North Hills community, where Rob has lived since 2020. After renovating and updating the space, the tap room began operating in March 2026, under the talented and enthusiastic guidance of their tap room manager Max. During this soft open phase, the staff continued to refine the space, build out the tap list, and package beers for to go sales. They remained committed to listening to customer feedback, finding the best fit for the neighborhood, and creating an environment that makes customers feel at home.
Balance Brewing will host its grand opening on June 27, 2026.

Rob Houston
CO-FOUNDER, OPERATIONS MANAGER
Rob got his start at Monday Night Brewing in Atlanta, GA back in 2015. He started in Packaging and Logistics and eventually became their Production Manager. He relocated to Pittsburgh in 2019. Before opening Balance, Rob worked locally for Hitchhiker Brewing, Brew Gentlemen, and Pittsburgh Brewing.
Outside of work, Rob enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, and watching the Florida Gators.

Matt Gibb
CO-FOUNDER, HEAD BREWER
Matt is Head Brewer and Co-Owner here at Balance. With over a decade of industry experience he has brewed on 5 gallon up to 100 barrel systems covering a variety of American and European beer styles. While he’s no stranger to hoppy IPA’s and fruited Sour beers you’ll likely find him enjoying a mug of crisp House Lager after a long brew day.
When he’s not wrangling brewing hoses or shoveling spent grain into bins, he and his partner Andrea enjoy traveling to new places in search of great food, drink and hiking adventures!

Drew Smith
CO-FOUNDER, FINANCE MANAGER
Drew has well over a decade of experience leading finance, accounting, and operations for craft beverage businesses. Also a Monday Night Brewing alumni, Drew's tenure there as CFO provided valuable experience which he now brings to Balance Brewing Company. Originally a native of the South Hills of Pittsburgh, he currently resides with his family in Atlanta, where he also runs his firm, Crafted Advisory - a Fractional CFO service for craft makers.
Outside of work, he looks for any opportunity to get outside with his family either camping, riding bikes, or hitting the ski slopes.

Max Coleman
TAPROOM MANAGER
Meet Max, our taproom manager who hails from Breckenridge, Colorado. Max’s roots in the brewing industry started at Highside Brewing in CO, where he discovered his passion for craft beer. From making sure everything taproom related is operating smoothly, to running social media and events, Max ensures it’s all covered! When he is not working, you’ll find him on the golf course attempting to hit the ball straight. While he is new to tahn, he’s slowly been learning the Yinzer way. He has been an integral part of the Balance team, always bringing a positive attitude to work with him everyday!
